Be Willing to Be Weird

Be Weird

Most of my life I have been told that I’m weird, so at some point I decided to own it, and be proud of being weird. It has never been an insult to me. In fact, I would say that at times I have gone out of my way to be weird for most of my life. It wasn’t until recently when I read a post by  Jon Acuff (one of my motivational heroes) that I was really encouraged to embrace my weirdness for the purpose of making better work. It’s really easy to be boring, and it’s boring to be normal (in my opinion).
It’s really easy to be boring, and it’s boring to be normal (in my opinion).
Normal work doesn’t get noticed, normal work is created all the time; weird is bold, weird is unique. Especially as creatives, we really need to explore and be confident in our weirdness. Creative brains are weird so we can make new and exciting things to share and make the world take notice. No one is really “normal”, but sometimes people get stuck doing things that are, never taking chances on their weird ideas. Every innovator has been seen as weird at first, until people realized how amazing what they were doing really was. As Jon Acuff says, “Approach whatever it is you’re working on with your sense of style, your sense of adventure, your sense of weird.” Be weird, it’s much more fun, and the world will thank you for it.
