Why I Do What I Do

blogpost61why-01

Why do I write this blog? I mean, what’s the point? There’s probably lots of other designers or creative directors that know what I know (and more) that don’t feel the need to talk about it. This week I just thought I would share some of my reasons for why I am here.

If you go back to my very first post  you’ll find I talk a little bit about why. But I wanted to really dig a little more into my why for you. Simon Sinek says to start with why.
You have to start at why because if you don’t know why you do something you won’t have any passion or reason or motivation to continue to do it.
My why came from a point of frustration and cynicism about the direction of design and complaining about the designers that do it. You know what I mean. The five dollar logo sites or the local designer who underbids every self-respecting professional and gets hundreds more jobs than you every year, just because they’re cheaper. It’s frustrating to say the least.
The most frustrating part for me though, was not only that these designers were cheap, but that they weren’t even good. I looked around the city I live and work in and saw all the terrible design that exists and I got really discouraged. I did a lot of complaining to my fellow creatives, my husband, my best friends, even family, about these “hack” designers. I always felt like I needed to blow off steam about my frustrations way to often, way more than I said anything complimentary about the good design that was happening in my town.
I don’t remember exactly how I came to my realization. But I came to see that much like anything else that needs change, I could either complain about how irritating it all is or I could do something to change it. Since I am who I am, I decided to do something about it.
So I started this blog as a tool, as a resource for other designers to learn to care about all the different aspects of design. I wanted to explain that not only does design matter but how you design matters, how you think about design matters, how you get inspired matters, and so much more!
I’ll end with this, my why boils down to two things. I do what I do because I want to help make better designers instead of just complaining about all the bad ones. I write blogs, and post inspiration, and make YouTube videos because I want to make an impact, however small. I want the universe of graphic designers and creatives that take the time to spend with me to feel encouraged and inspired.
It’s not a long explanation about why I’m here, but sometimes simple is better. I’m so glad you’re here and I hope you’ll continue to stay with me on this journey. Design is a wonderful world, I hope you’ll join me here. Because design matters.
